January 2008

Pathways Awarded $5,000 Grant

This spring, you will notice something very different at Pathways. Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the H. Neil MeCaskey, Jr. Foundation, Inc., we will have new footing in our arena.  This new footing dries very quickly and will allow us to have classes more regularly – even after it rains! We will need volunteers to help lay the new footing soon. Volunteers will be notified by e-mail when this workday will be.

In 2006, funding from the H. Neil MeCaskey, Jr. Foundation, Inc. also allowed us to purchase our portable mounting ramp as well as a handicapped accessible restroom.

Classes Begin March 5th

Pathways will resume classes on March 5, 2008.  We will only have the 6:15 pm class on the 5th.  However, starting March 12, we will have both the 6:15 pm and 7 pm classes regularly. The only scheduled break this year will be for the month of August. We are excited about our 2008 classes and look forward to seeing all of our volunteers again. We will e-mail you again closer to March 5 asking for volunteers. To see a complete schedule of classes for 2008, click here.

Pathways At The Merc

Pathways is The Merc’s “Deserving Organization” in January.  All month, The Merc will have change jars set out at their registers for people to “lighten their load” by donating their change to us.  The Merc is located at 901 Iowa St. in Lawrence, KS.

We also are hosting a booth at The Merc on January 19, 2008 from 10 am - 4 pm to collect additional donations and talk to The Merc’s customers about what Pathways does for the community.  There are three time slots in which you can volunteer (10-12; 12-2; and 2-4).  If you are interested in helping staff our information booth, please e-mail us at pathwaysaat@yahoo.com.

Volunteer Spotlight: John Dunham

John has been a regular volunteer at Pathways since 2006.

“I was attracted to volunteering at Pathways because I wanted to spend some of my spare time helping others.  And because I love animals, including horses (the horses at Pathways are LOTS of fun to be around, as are the people!). My wife Cindy and I have two Labrador retrievers and two cats. We also have a daughter, Tricia, who is a sophomore at KU.

I work as the Cartographic Services Manager for the Kansas Geological Survey, producing geologic maps, and geologic geographic information systems (GIS) data. I am a geographer rather than a geologist.  I work with geologists who collect mapping data in the field. Our main emphasis is creation of county geologic maps and data, but we work on other geologic mapping projects as well.

In addition to volunteering at Pathways, I like running, watching football and basketball (especially KU!), and listening to and playing music (well, trying to play – I like to mess around with guitars). I keep busy exercising and socializing through Red Dog’s Dog Days (http://www.reddogsdogdays.org).”
